The brown bear's range once extended across Northern and Central Europe, Asia, and the Atlas Mountains. In Europe, bears are mainly confined to mountain forests.

There is currently no resident population of brown bears in Austria, but there are annual reports of roaming individuals from Italy or Slovenia.
