crack
In the case of livestock presumably killed by a large predator, the following measures should be taken immediately:
- Contact the relevant authority immediately (see contact details below), also to determine the next steps.
- The killed animal or damaged beehives not Do not move the site or make any further manipulations at the location where it was found.
- Protect the carcass from the elements (e.g., by covering it with a tarpaulin). Minimize your own tracks to avoid destroying traces left by predators.
- Keep other animals away from the carcass.
- The crack assessor evaluates the case on site and provides information about possible compensation.
These measures increase the chances of providing evidence of predators and thus receiving compensation.
The costs for assessment, sampling, and analysis are borne by the federal states. The Austrian Center for Bear, Wolf, and Lynx coordinates the billing.
The quality of the DNA samples depends on the following factors.
- Decomposition status: the more advanced the decomposition, the lower the DNA quality.
- weather influences
- Subsequent use by other wild animals or scavengers (birds, foxes, small animals, insects, etc.)
- Contamination from soil or the found animal's own blood
